Acne

Although often referred to as a teenage condition, acne can actually affect any age group. It is the most common skin disease treated by dermatologists and over 80% of individuals deal with acne at some point in their lives.
Regardless of your age, acne can be both emotionally and psychologically damaging. It can affect your self confidence, and in extreme cases, produce painful lesions which can lead to permanent scarring.
What Causes Acne?
Also called vulgaris, acne generally affects the face, neck, back, shoulders, and chest area. Acne occurs when the bacteria responsible for pimples, known as propionibacterium acnes, blocks pores and leads to inflammation and pustules. The responsible bacteria commonly lives on the skin of most people, surviving on fatty acids and oils the skin produces.
The Evolution of an Acne Pimple
There are a lot of myths surrounding acne. You’ve probably heard people say thing like, “Oh, I shouldn’t have eaten those French fries last night. I woke up with a pimple!” Actually, this can’t happen. The evolution of an acne pimple doesn’t occur overnight. Here’s what really happens:
- First, a pore of your skin becomes clogged with dirt or oil. This happens because propionibacterium acnes is already on your skin, and the bacteria multiplies as it feeds off of the fatty acids in the clogged pore.
- Once the bacteria grows and reaches the point of overgrowth in your pore, the offending bacteria produces chemicals to begin to break down the walls of your pore.
- After that second step occurs, an acne lesion is formed and you will begin to notice a pimple. This, in fact, is actually a minor-infection in and on your skin, caused by the overgrowth of propionibacterium acnes.
Because of that process, you can see that acne can’t be formed overnight from eating fried foods. The bacteria is always present on your skin and sometimes the evolution process takes weeks before a pimple surfaces.
The Connection Between Food and Acne
Although it doesn’t happen overnight, food does play a role in acne outbreaks. If you are predisposed to the development of acne and you are consuming the wrong types of foods, you will trigger acne outbreaks. Notice, we said, “if you are predisposed to its development.”
That’s because every person’s body works a bit differently. Some can eat certain foods without being affected at all. If you are a person who suffers from acne, and you consume foods that cause your insulin levels to rise (such as refined carbohydrates and sugar), this causes your pores to secrete sebum, which is a greasy substance that attracts the acne-producing bacteria.
See how that works together? So, what’s the solution?

The Natural Cure for Acne
- Keeping Your Skin Clean – In order to avoid acne outbreaks, it will take a two step process. The first involves keeping dirt from clogging your pores. Of course, this can be accomplished by using over-the-counter facial cleansing products containing benzoyl peroxide. Clean your skin twice daily and keep your hands away from your face.
Every time you touch your face throughout the day, you are basically placing new bacteria and germs into your pores. This can multiply your acne problems. So, keep your skin clean and keep your hands off. Next, here are some adjustments to make to your diet.
- Dietary Changes – By reducing the amount of insulin spiking foods you consume, you’ll be able to stop the over production of oils that attract acne-producing bacteria. The main food to steer clear of is sugar, along with any all-grain carbohydrates that are immediately converted to sugar in your body. The list of offenders includes bread, pasta, rice, corn, potatoes, and cereal.
What? That doesn’t make sense. I thought healthy grains are good for you! Yes, some of these grains, such as whole wheat, are essentially good for your body, but if you are predisposed to acne, they also pose a problem. You don’t have to eliminate grains altogether, but whole grains found in fresh vegetables are metabolized more slowly and they don’t cause insulin spikes, or the resulting oil production.
In order to see if sugars and grain carbohydrates are your culprit, remove them from your diet for two weeks, replacing them with more fresh, whole vegetables. If your skin clears up substantially, you have your answer.
Conventional Treatments for Acne
Since acne is a mini-infection, dermatologists sometimes will prescribe antibiotics for acne treatment. Although this will work to clear up an outbreak, since antibiotics will kill off the offending bacteria, keep in mind that antibiotics also strip your body from healthy, germ fighting bacteria as well. Antibiotics should always be taken sparingly, and you should also realize that antibiotics do nothing to treat the underlying, or root cause of acne.
Vitamin D for Acne Treatment
If you’ve tried antibiotics and you are looking for another way to treat acne, consider optimizing your vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is vital to controlling infections and establishing a healthy immune system.
By raising your vitamin D levels, you’ll increase antimicrobial peptides in your body, which are a natural form of antibiotics. The best way to increase vitamin D? Getting out in the sunshine. When the weather doesn’t permit, you may want to choose oral supplements, but consult your family physician before taking this route.
By putting these simple strategies in place, you will be well on your way to a cleaner, smoother, acne free complexion.
